A living raw food diet can be quite challenging since it is a diet and lifestyle that is not familiar to most people. People who are used to eating over-processed “meat and potatoes” diet, will sometimes find this diet intimidating, expensive, difficult to comprehend, and a bit overwhelming.
We all know that the key to maintaining your body’s vibrant health is to eat and maintain a well-balanced diet. However, most of us just do not know where to start when it comes to a living raw food diet. Below are some tips to overcome the difficulties when switching to this type of diet.
1. One of the best ways to keep your body healthy and also cut down on your shopping budget, is to eat according to the seasons. Eating foods that are in season will keep your body’s eco-system in balance as well as the environment’s eco-system and the economy’s eco-system.
By doing this, you are supporting your local organic farmers in their plight to keep growing and selling organic produce. Vegetables and fruits that are in season are also less expensive.
2. Watch your food combinations. For instance, you should eat fruit by itself. Fruit is a very important food as it cleanses the body out. It is easily digestible and because of its exquisiteness, it should be eaten alone. It is good to start your day with a fruit smoothie or a bowl of fruit in the morning. Allow it to digest for at least an hour before consuming anything else.
Always eat your proteins and fats at separate meals and eating only one protein at a time. Proteins like nuts require more digestion time than other foods as they contain over 50% fats, so they are best consumed before sundown.
3. Choose your colors wisely meaning your meals should resemble the colors of the rainbow. In preparing your meals mix the reds, greens, oranges, yellows, purple or tan. Instead of all greens in your salad, choose Swiss chard as it contains both green and red. Our bodies love variety, so have fun using colors to diversify your food.
4. Keep it simple, yet varied. Initially, doing groceries for a living raw food diet can be a nightmare. So it is better to divide your shopping list into the following categories: nuts, seeds, oils, fruits, vegetables, grains, super foods, and miscellaneous.
Make sure to add to your list what you need from your recipes according to each category. Always keep in mind that you can substitute oil or a different nut from what the original recipe calls for. You should plan to have at least three days worth of food when doing your grocery. It is always easier to maintain this diet if you plan your meals ahead.
5. Occasionally, treat yourself with exotic foods like acai berries, durian, kumquats, jackfruit, and other food that you have not eaten before. See how your body responds and make a fun recipe with it.
The living raw food diet consists of fruits, vegetables, sprouted grains, nuts, seeds, and super foods. To have a balanced diet, make sure you get at least 2-6 servings of each daily, as each category have a purpose.
The fruits clean your body out and vegetables build your body up. Your grains nuts, oils, and seeds will provide bulk, fats, and substance for the body while the super foods are a great addition as it provides optimal overall nutrition to the body as it heals itself.
